Malawian coach Meke Mwase has dumped Swaziland club Mbabane Highlanders after seven games in charge in all competitions in the current season, Swazi media has reported.

According to Swazi Observer, the former Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers mentor left Swaziland last week, barely a day after Highlanders played out a goalless draw against Midas.

“A source close to the matter revealed that the coach had no contract with the team for the current season.

“He has left Highlanders after failing to secure a contract as he was working on a ‘memorandum of understanding’ since the season started,” the paper quoted an official.

Mwase could not be reached for comment yesterday although the paper reported that he had “returned to his native country, Malawi”.

Under Mwase’s tutelage, Highlanders finished as runners-up in the Swazi Premier League last season.

His team was on course to win the league title last season, but faltered towards the end to give a chance to Leopards to win the championship.

He also won coach of the first round award.

Mwase is following in the footsteps of his former assistant and compatriot Charles Manda who left the club and is now coaching Civo United in Lilongwe.

Manda was appointed assistant to Mwase in August 2015, re-uniting the two former Flames and Be Forward Wanderers defenders.n
