Mzimba district commissioner (DC) Thomas Chirwa has hailed agricultural fairs as a forum that exposes farmers to new technologies and things they did not know to improve agriculture in the country.

Chirwa was speaking at the opening of a three-day Agriculture Fair, the first of its kind in Mzimba North, being held under the theme Promotion of Value Addition and Linking Farmers to Markets: A Key to Increase Income and Sustainable Livelihood.

He said the fair will help farmers find markets for their products and know where they can buy the products they need.

Said the DC: “Some farmers may not know where they can find some products and the fair makes available information they were not aware of.”

He said the fair brings together different farmers with different talent saying the farmers are able to learn from each other different skill to they have.

Mzimba North district agricultural extension coordinating committee chairperson Landirani Mthandi said the fair seeks to bring all stakeholders together to showcase their produce.

However, he said the turnout was a let-down.

Exhibitors at the fair include Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, commercial institutions, agricultural trading companies and farmers’ cooperatives.
