Mzimba district commissioner (DC) the Reverend Moses Chimphepo has asked farmers in the district to maximise their agricultural productivity to meet the high demand for produce.

Chimphepo said the coming in of a rural growth centre at Jenda would automatically increase people’s demand for agricultural crops; hence, the call to farmers to scale up their production.

He was speaking on Friday last week during an agricultural show held at Kazingilira Primary School ground under Champhira Extension Planning Area (EPA) in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mzikubola in the district.

Chimphepo said government has allocated K700 million to be used in the transformation of Jenda Trading Centre into a rural growth centre.

The DC said the funds would be used for construction of a multi-purpose hall, a modern bus depot and a market, improved piped water system and the electrification of the centre, among other projects.

Mzimba acting district agricultural development officer Renald Tchongwe commended non-governmental organisations (NGOs) implementing development programmes in the district, banks and other stakeholders who took part in sponsoring this year’s show.

Agricultural shows offer a platform for various farmers to share notes on how they can improve their agricultural productivity using modern methods of farming. During such shows, outstanding farmers are awarded prizes as one way of motivating them.

This year’s agricultural show was held under the theme ‘Promoting stakeholders’ participation for increased agricultural production and income.’
