Mzuni Theatre Arts Group premieres Tales of a Migrant in Blantyre
Mzuzu University Theatre Arts Group (Mutag) will stage its new play, Tales of a Migrant, at the HS Winehouse in Blantyre on Friday.
The play, a solo performance by Misheck Mzumara, was written and directed by Thoko Kapiri and features poetry by Nyamalikiti Nthiwatiwa.
Kapiri has performed the play in Malawi and in Germany before. Mzumara also once performed alongside him in the same play in Germany, Ireland and in Malawi at some point.
When asked on how Malawians will take a solo performance, Mzumara, who is the patron of Mutag and lecturer in Theatre Arts at Mzuni, said it is a big challenge doing a one man show; especially in Malawi where people are used to large cast productions.
“We are still doing it because Mutag believes that what can be done elsewhere in the world in terms of art can also be done in Malawi. Mutag is doing one-man shows, two-man shows and big-cast shows. At the moment Tales of a Migrant, Final Faithfools written by Misheck Banda and Lion King are the three Mutag plays that are touring the country,” he said.
After the performance in Blantyre, Tales of A Migrant will be performed at Mzuni with support from Ntondo records of Mzuzu on May 11. Finally the play will be performed at Madsoc in Lilongwe with support from Madsoc Mwezi Arts Crew.
