Mzuzu Diocese to raise K30m for new parishes

Mzuzu Doicese of the Catholic Church has organised a fundraising dinner and dance to raise K30 million for the construction of churches and priests’ houses at its four new parishes.

The diocese expects to have Vice-President Saulos Chilima as the guest of honour during the event which will take place at Chatonda Lodge in the city on September 1 2017.

Mfune: Churches should be self-reliant

Speaking in an interview, Mzuzu Diocese director of finance, investment and administration Father Tony Mfune said the diocese no longer depends on donors.

He said: “In the past, we used to get money from donors. But now most donors are no longer with us. That is why, as a diocese, we have decided to fundraise to have a starter-pack for the parishes to embark on their projects.”

A Christian at St Albert Parish, Gift Mtonga, encouraged fellow members to support the initiative, saying donors and other well-wishers can only come in when locals are self-reliant.

“All of us need to join hands in this initiative because the church is lacking a lot in terms of infrastructure and other resources,” he said. n
