Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay road reconstruction works start 2014

Malawi Government will in the first quarter of 2014 start reconstructing the Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay Road after successfully sourcing funds to implement the project.

Minister of Transport and Public Works Sidik Mia disclosed this Friday in Parliament during question time when he was responding to member of Parliament for Nkhata Bay North West David Yohane Kaweche on a request for the responsible ministry to consider re-constructing the road.

According to Kaweche, the road is in a very bad state, yet it is one of the oldest but important roads in the country.

“The process of rehabilitating the road is in the ministry’s high priorities, considering the road economic importance and as of now, funds for the project have already been sourced from the African Development Bank, “said Mia.

Mia also said they were in the process of identifying a contractor to carry out the work on the ground.

The contractor is expected to review the design of the road, undertake pre-contractual services and supervise in the work itself, said the minister.

“Indeed, there are procedures that government would have to follow despite that funds are available. And as regards funds that are allocated in the project for our cooperate partners, they are interested to know each and everything we do and procure.

“In this case, everything we do in the project has to be referred back to them for a no objection and for it to go ahead, that is the normal formality. However, we are on it and I hope in the first quarter of 2014, this construction will be on the ground,” he said.
