Mzuzu songbird announces album launch

A rising songbird in the Northern Region Maria Nundwe has announced herself onto the gospel music scene with an album Lekani Kusuzgika to be launched on May 29 in Mzuzu.

The 12-track album has already gained ground in the region as two of its songs were voted second and third best songs in a K400 000 music competition organised by the Roman Catholic owned Tuntufye Radio in Karonga.

The songs, Urwirwi and Lekani the title track Kusuzgika, draw strength from their originality.

In an interview, Nundwe said most of the songs are fused with cultural elements of the Tumbuka and Ngoni to define her personality.

“I express myself and my culture through music. I want to be unique as a musician. I don’t want to be a copycat,” says Nundwe who is also a lead vocalist and composer for Moyale Praise Team and Moyale Mvano Choir.

Nundwe started recording the album in 2010, but shelved the project due to lack of funds. It was last year that she revived the project.

“The album reminds Christians that the death of Jesus Christ on the cross defeated all tribulations that we may be going through. We are not supposed to be challenged with diseases or poverty.

“If we go through all these problems, we need to believe and trust in the Lord that all is temporary,” said Nundwe.

The launch at Mzuzu Boma Park will be headlined by Great Angels Choir, Kamuzu Barracks, Thoko Suya and Evans Meleka.
