Nanzikambe aids jailbreak Saturday

The sirens should be blaring, the neighbourhoods ignited and all roads leading to where the unexpected happens. And what are we going do about it?

Nanzikambe Arts on Saturday facilitates an artistic jailbreak as it hosts drama and music talent from Zomba and Chichiri prisons.

According to Nanzikambe projects officer, Effie Makepeace, the up-and-coming arts venue hosts a 15-member band from Zomba Maximum Prison and a 20-piece drama group from Chichiri Prison.

Makepeace said the show is in partnership with the Malawi Prison Service to use arts to reform and empower inmates through the Prison Reform Band.

The band is a fully geared outfit, with electric equipment, writing own songs played in a variety of genres, including reggae and Afro Jazz.

“They are talented guys and it must be a good afternoon of fun,” said Makepeace.

She said Nanzikambe would show a piece that tells a story of an inmate who, after serving a jail sentence at the end of which he is totally reformed, still meets cold reception from society.

“It is the reality out here and we are advocating for change,” she said.

She said more about the show is on http://www.facebook.com/events/140060386135212.

Nanzikambe’s romance with the prisons dates back to January 2011, growing along the way, oiled by a grant from the US Embassy early this year.

Nanzikambe also holds drama workshops at Chichiri Prison every Friday, funded by the Norwergian Embassy.

In May, the drama group and band toured Kasungu, Nkhotakota and Mzuzu prisons on an Aids awareness mission.

The show attracts a K500 gate fee.
