National Tennis Centre project starts June

Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (Ltam) president Francis Mwansa says plans to turn the Country Club Limbe’s (CCL) tennis section into a national lawn tennis centre start on June 1.

This follows discussions that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Southern Africa development officer Ryan Kruger had with the CCL officials last week concerning the project.

According to Mwansa, it has been agreed that the CCL will loan out the tennis facility to Ltam on a long-term contract so that the ITF can develop it into international standards for the hosting of high profile international competition and training workshops.

“What remains now is the legal aspect of our agreement with the CCL to formalise the deal of acquiring the tennis facility. Otherwise, the shaping of the CCL tennis section into our desired standard will start on June 1,” he said.

At present, Malawi is the only lawn tennis playing country in the Southern African Region yet to host an ITF sanctioned international competition due to lack of a proper venue.

But with the coming in of the national tennis centre, the country will be registered on the ITF calendar as a suitable venue for such events.
