New Dawn lines up big title fights
New Dawn Boxing Promotions has lined up two title fights on one stage to excite local boxing fans who are often denied such boxing feats.
The first on the menu will be a fight between lightweight boxers Wilson Masamba and Salimu Chazama while the second bout pits Alick Gogoda against Mussa Ajibu in a heavyweight encounter.
New Dawn managing director Michael Chimaliza said they want to take a new approach in the boxing entertainment industry in the year 2015.
“We want to have such a package on one go so as to give boxing fans a real treat. These will all be title fights. Our objective is to come up with national champions who really deserve the title in their respective categories. We are currently embarking on finalising logistics towards this,” said Chimaliza.
He said he will announce the dates of the fights once all logistics have been concluded.
“It is only when we have deserving national champions in all the categories that we can dare international fighters. It is important that all the champions be thoroughly-tested,” said Chimaliza.
The promoter has, however, expressed reservations with the standards of referees and judges the country has at the moment.
“I will be taking this up with the Malawi Boxing Control Board [MPBC]. Much as we want to take boxing to another level, the feedback we have been receiving is that most boxing fans are unhappy with the way judges and referees decide bouts,” said Chimaliza.
