Nga’mbi strike not enough

Flames midfielder Robert Ng’ambi’s lone goal was not enough to save Platinum Stars from the jaws of a 3-1 defeat by Kinnah Phiri’s Free State Stars in Rustenburg, South Africa on Saturday afternoon.

South Africa media reports that for his fourth goal of the season on the 52nd minute, Ng’ambi cancelled out Camaldine Abraw’s opener before Moeketsi Sekola struck twice in this Absa Premiership match.

The victory moved Free State to position 12 on the Absa Premiership standings while Platinum Stars dropped to 14th spot in the 16-team league.

Still on Saturday, veteran striker Esau Kanyenda played a full game as Polokwane City’s impressive showing continued with a 2-1 beating of Maritzburg United at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Puleng Tlolane netted a late winner for City, after earlier goals from Cole Alexander and Mohammed Anas had left the teams level.

In another game on Saturday night, Lehlohonolo Majoro’s first-half goal and a deflected Kermit Erasmus’s effort gave Orlando Pirates a 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic at Orlando Stadium.

Frank Gabadinho Mhango played a full game alongside scorer of the day Lerato Lamola. Celtic are 10th with 20 points whereas Pirates moved to fourth on 26 points.

Before the game, Celtic coach Clinton Larsen revealed how he helped his strikers, including Gabadinho, rediscover scoring form with a brace last weekend.

“I thought there was a lot of tension among the players when we got into goal-scoring positions. I just told the players to relax and not be worried about what the bench was thinking if they miss two or three chances,” Larsen told KickOff.com.

“I am not sure if the advice helped, but Gabadinho Mhango scored for the first time in a while when he got two against Black Aces.” n
