NGO equips Mangochi with disaster risk reduction tools

The Cooperazione Internazionale (Coopi) on Tuesday handed over hazard maps and disaster risk reduction (DRR) toolkit to Mangochi District Council.

The toolkit includes booklets and compact discs on early warning signs, indigenous knowledge and climate adaptation.

Coopi DRR officer Harry Solomon said the handover follows a project the organisation instituted aimed at establishing areas of possible disasters in Mangochi and how best the council and communities can handle such disasters.

“We have been on the ground establishing maps of vulnerable areas and communities and these tools will help the district’s civil protection committee and similar committees at area and village levels to mitigate the impact of disasters in Mangochi,” he said.

The district’s assistant district agricultural development officer Chimwemwe Chisenga said with the hazard maps and toolkit complete the council’s contingency plan package.

“We are grateful for these tools. What is remaining is for us to familiarise communities with the tools and how they can use them to manage disasters,” he said. n
