Nigerian applies for FAM’s CAF A Licence course

Nigerian football coach Latees Adebayor has emerged as the only foreigner to apply for a CAF A Licence course which FAM will host from April 30 at the Chiwembe Technical Centre, Blantyre.

In a telephone interview from Lagos yesterday, Adebayor said he had contacted FAM technical director John Kaputa expressing interest in the course whose 56 shortlisted participants are Malawians based in and outside the country.

“Nigeria has only hosted a CAF B Licence, which I have. I now want the A Licence to prepare myself for any national team coaching job in Africa. I have been to Cameroon, Dubai and South Africa and I now want to come to Blantyre. I hear it is a nice place,” said the man who says is a football coaches instructor.

Additionally, Adebayor, who also holds a physical education bachelor’s degree, said he was part of the Nigeria Under-17 national team coaching panel that qualified for the 2007 World Cup.

Kaputa confirmed that Adebayor hopes to come for the first-ever month-long course. He said it was common for such courses to attract foreigners and that local coaches can also apply for such courses in other countries.

“He contacted CAF asking for a country that will host the A Licence and he was referred to Malawi. Now, I will ask the FAM general secretary SuzgoNyirenda to verify with their Nigerian counterparts his profile before referring his application to CAF,” Kaputa explained.

Kaputa will submit Adebayor’s application to CAF for a nod alongside others such as Stan Chirwa, Ernest Mtawali and John Maduka who have, despite not being on the shortlist, expressed interest.
