No regrets over Tiga players—NAM

Happy with Queens' performance: Bapu
Happy with Queens’ performance: Bapu

NAM has said it does not regret its move to drop Tigresses players from the Malawi Queens squad that took part in the Fast5 World Netball Series in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Queens travelled to New Zealand without key players such as Sindi Simtowe, Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango and Beatrice Mpinganjira who were dropped in controversial circumstances.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) vice-president Chimwemwe Kachingwe and general secretary Carol Bapu said the performance of the Queens, even without the Tigresses players, was impressive.

“The coaches would be better placed to comment, but I would say the girls put up a good fight throughout the tournament, they played very well,” said Kachingwe.

Replying to a questionnaire through e-mail, Bapu said: “I believe you are watching the games and you have seen how the girls are playing.”

Queens’ official sponsors, Airtel Money said while the performance could have been better, it was satisfactory.

Airtel Malawi public relations and corporate communications manager Edith Tsirizani said: “There is always room for improvement but suffice to say their performance was quite satisfactory. However, they have to aim high and reach lofty heights.”

The Queens lost their three first games to Australia, Jamaica and New Zealand before, edging England 35-32.

Then they lost to continental rivals South Africa’s Proteas 41-35. On Sunday they beat England to retain their fifth position.
