Nomads Balaka fans in hospital after road accident

Four Mighty Wanderers fans were admitted to Balaka District Hospital on Sunday after suffering injuries in a road accident as they celebrated their team’s Standard Bank Knockout Trophy triumph.

Nomads supporters committee chairperson Yona Malunga and general secretary David Kanyenda confirmed the accident, saying it occurred near Balaka Stadium.

Said Kanyenda: “Quite a number of the fans were injured, but only four were admitted while the rest were treated as outpatients.

“They are Balaka-based fans and they came to Ntcheu to welcome the team in a lorry. They meant to escort the convoy up to Manjawira, but the incident happened just after we had departed Balaka when the sidebars of the lorry suddenly opened as the vehicle was negotiating a bend,” explained Kanyenda.

He said in the absence of a police, he could not confirm details of how the accident occurred.

Kanyenda also said the Nomads sent three executive committee members to cheer the injured fans and their families.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families. We wish them a quick recovery,” he said.

Mighty Wanderers beat Silver Strikers 1-0 to retain the Standard Bank Knockout Trophy at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday.
