Nomads K12m richer

 

Carlsberg Cup champions Be Forward Wanderers can now smile all the way to the bank after Football Association of Malawi (FAM) paid their K12 million prize money.

Confirming the development, FAM competitions manager Gomezagni Zakazaka, said they had paid the champions, runners-up Silver Strikers and semi-finalists Mangochi United and Mafco.

Silver got K5 million as runners-up while semi-finalist, Mangochi and Mafco got K700 000 each.

The development is a relief Wanderers players who were enquiring when the money would be paid.

But Zakazaka said the rules and regulations of the competition were clear on when the prize money should be paid.

“The rules state that the prize money shall be paid within 30 days after the final is played. We knew we were going to pay them within the stipulated period,” he said.

Wanderers vice-chairperson Gift Mkandawire said they were now relieved that the prize money has been paid.

“We were indeed under pressure from players who want the fruits of their sweat. We are glad that at last we can now pay the players,” said Mkandawire without revealing how much the players would share.

Meanwhile, runners-up Silver Strikers already announced that the players would share 50 percent of the prize money.

Silver general secretary Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda said they had agreed that the players deserve half the prize money.

Silver lost 5-4 on post-match penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. n
