North netball league on death bed

The Northern Region Netball Commitee (NRNC) has expressed concern over continued inactivity of the sport in the region due to lack of sponsorship.

It is now two years since Nico Life withdrew its sponsorship.

The situation is denying the region’s up-and-coming players a chance to showcase their talent, according to NRNC.

The committee’s chairperson Chancy Munthali said efforts to convince sponsors to rescue the league have proved futile.

“We submitted proposals to various companies in Mzuzu. However, the response we get is that they will come back to us,” she said.

Munthali feared that the continued absence of a league will have adverse effects on the development of the sport in the North whose clubs have never won a national tournament.

“We still have no companies to sponsor competitions. Obviously, alot of talent will be lost,” she said.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) president Rose Chinunda and general secretary Carol Bapu were not available for comment as they are with the junior national team in Botswana at the Under-21 World Cup qualifiers.

However, Minister of Sports and Culture Grace Chiumia said she has also tried without success to help the region get sponsors.

She said: “It is sad that we have many companies in the North, but they are failing to sponsor the league.

“The Southern and Central regions have sponsors while the North is still behind.

“It is my appeal once again to companies to support netball, a sport which is making the country proud on the international stage.” n
