Nation Publications Limited (NPL) has underscored the need for every Malawian to play a part in the tree planting exercise to save the country from environmental degradation.

On Friday, NPL members of staff flocked to Mudi Dam catchment area where they partnered Blantyre Water Board (BWB) and  Association of Environmental Journalists (AEJ) to plant over 1 000 trees.

NPL marketing officer Vanessa Mabviko said in an interview tree planting and conservation is crucial to people’s livelihoods.

She said: “But more critical, as NPL, is the fact that our products are primarily made out of trees. We also wanted to show people that as a leading media house in the country, we are part of conserving the environment.”

The NPL delegation was led by administration and human resources manager (AHRM) Mike Kandulu and The Nation editor Aubrey Mchulu.

On her part, BWB public affairs officer Priscilla Mateyu applauded NPL and AEJ for taking part in the exercise which she described as important to restoring the former glory of Mudi catchment land.

Since BWB launched this season’s tree planting exercise in early January, about 15 000 trees out of the targeted 20 000 have been planted at the site.

NPL publishes The Nation, Weekend Nation, Nation on Sunday, Fuko and Nation Online. n
