Nyika National Park receives 34 elephants

The process of translocating 520 elephants from Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve came to a conclusion on Wednesday when the last 34 elephants arrived at Nyika National Park in Rumphi.

According to Peace Parks Foundation project manager, Arrie van Wyk, the new arrivals will grow the elephant population in Nyika to 620. Nyika has about 100 elephants.

He said Peace Parks Foundation, which is managing the translocation and looking after the elephants, is expected to train some local pilots and provide an aircraft to the park to directly monitor the elephants.

He said the elephants also have satellite collars to directly track them.

Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Aggrey Masi did not witness the key event as he left the park before the animals arrived.

But Zambia’s Minister of Tourism and Culture Charles Banda addressed the people that gathered to welcome the new animals.

The park shares its borders with Zambia; hence the two governments work hand in hand in the Malawi-Zambia Trans frontier Conservation Area.

In an interview, Masi called upon the communities surrounding the park to protect the elephants against poachers.

On his part, Banda hailed the relationship between Malawi and Zambia in conserving wildlife.

“The communities from the two countries must guard against poaching to improve the tourism sector,” Banda said.
