Nyimbo Music Company unveils new music brand

Listen to this article

There is no denying that Nyimbo Music Company (NMC), which is owned by Daud Suleman, strives for excellence and uniqueness as far as creation of music brands is concerned in the country.

NMC first broke the record with creation of Fikisa, a brand which took the country’s entertainment industry with a bang.

The person behind the brand: Chikondi Suleman

Fikisa, which comprises Jeffrey Thom and brothers of Suleman and Saidi Yusuf, emerged with a unique sound which was rich in folkore inspired music that was dominated by a traditional drum.

Akamwile and Walume Wawiwu were some of the songs that turned Fikisa brand into some sort of revolution for the country’s local music.

But as Fikisa brand is almost becoming history following contractual mishap, NMC has invented another promising brand called Find Codi.

Find Codi is an Afro jazz band comprising Chikondi Suleman, Kad Chiwanga and Steve Phambala, which basically promises to be another music force to reckon with.

The band proved its mettle during its recent media launch at Al Pacino uptown pub in Blantyre.

With Suleman on Piano, David Nachuma on keyboard, Chiwanga on drums, Ken Soko on bass guitar, Steve Phambala         on lead guiatar, Josua Asakaza on percussions and backing vocals and vocalist Thandaza Kamanga, the Find Codi proved to be a definition of standard music which caters for mature audience.

An interesting feature of the band was enchanting jazz sounds blended with extensive traditional instruments such as chisekese.

Suleman was toast of the night because of the way she manned three roles of main vocalist, pianist and chisekese player. It was such as rare moment for a female artist.

Suleman has also what it takes to be a great stage performer because her voice, stature, confidence and beauty dazzled the audience.

Her fashion sense was also a yummy spice to the entire performance.

However, the band was not tight as expected of a professional Afro or classic music band as it requires intensive practice on sounds that form a Southern African beat.

The instrumentalists need to master the music language that defines and conveys sophisticated and intriguing patterns of standard music.
