Malawian striker Sankhani Nyirenda celebrated his first cup triumph in Mozambique when his Desportivo de Beira beat Ferroviaro de Maputo 1-0 to lift the Mozambique Cup in Beira on Saturday.

Nyirenda played a full game, but it was his captain Manihno who netted the sole winner as Beira pocketed 550 000 meticais from cup sponsors, mobile network Mcel.

“I am very happy because it is a dream for every footballer to win something by the end of a year. I have had four goals in the cup. Now, I am just looking forward to more,” the former Big Bullets forward said yesterday.

In South Africa, Flames midfielder Robert Ng’ambi played 70 minutes and helped Platinum Stars kick out Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 to qualify for the Telkom Knockout final.

Following the win at home [Royal Bafokeng Stadium], Stars, who are defending champions, date SuperSport United in the final.

In Zimbabwe, third-placed Caps United featured Malawians Ishmael Thindwa, George Nyirenda and Gerald Phiri Junior in their starting line-up as they drew 1-1 with Harare City on Sunday.

Nyirenda and Thindwa were substituted whereas winger Phiri finished the match, which was decided by Agrippa Murimba and Ronald Pfumbidzai’s goals for Harare and Caps respectively.
