Nyirenda, Kamphulusa shine in Nico General Golf

David Nyirenda on Wedneday put up a vintage show to win the Nico General Insurance  Company Limited Wedneday Ball Pool at Blantye Sports Club (BSC).

Playing off 12 handicap (h/c), Nyirenda amassed 23 stableford points to see off a 78 strongfield which braved the rains.

Furkan Gani  (h/c 11) trailed the champion by only two points to claim the second position while Tarang Makhecha (12hc) was third with 20 points.

Levison Kapito (h/c10) counted out Gerson Araujo (h/c14) to claim the fourth position after tying on 18 points.

Nyirenda, who went away with a trophy and multi-media speaker system, said he played his best golf ever.

“The pars were just flowing and I had a birdie. Everything was working out for me today, I really enjoyed my game,” he said.

In ladies category, women golf captain Bose Kamphulusa (h/c23) emerged winner with 16 points after seeing off a spirited challenge from her runner-up Hariet Marian (h/c20) who had 16 points.

Kamphulusa, who got a dry vacuum cleaner and a trophy, said it was a tight contest with Marian which was determined on hole nine after claiming a birfie

Golf Union of Malawi ((GUoM) president Hudson Kantwanje (h/c12) won the brokers category with 16 points while Kingsley Chimdima Mhango (h/12) carried the day in seniors’ category also with 16 points.

Webster Kaunga, Chiukepo Gondwe and Nico General Insurance chief executive officer (CEO) Donbell Mandala had two clubs.

Godwin Chimseu had the longest drive (men) on hole 13 whereas Connie Karuku did it in ladies section on hole 11. Nearest to the pin on hole 10 was John Suzi-Banda.

“We get feedback on our services and share ideas on how we can get better and to have 78 golfers for a mid-week tournament is encouraging. We are impressed and we thank the golfers for their support,” he said.

On his part, CEO Mandala pledged continued sponsorship, saying: “We enjoy being at Blantyre Sports Club and to golfers, I can only say thank you for suppoting us and be assured that next year, we will be back.”
