Nyondo condemns Gaba booing

The Flames’ two-goal hero Atusaye Nyondo has condemned the booing of his off-form striker partner Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango while he was being substituted at Kamuzu Stadium during yesterday’s 3-2 beating of Ethiopia.

“It’s not good to boo him. For a player like him, he is young. You can’t play well in each and every game. We should support him,” the University of Pretoria striker Nyondo said after the game.

Gabadinho, who has not scored in three Flames games, struggled with his first touch and could not just shrug off Ethiopia defence, which bean-pole Thok James, marshalled. So, off form was the Bloemfontein Celtic forward.

After break, coach Young Chimodzi finally had seen enough of Mhango and replaced him with Frank Banda, who, in a post-match interview also condemned the fans.

Banda too backed Mhango saying “the problem is that when you have a bad game people think it is deliberate, but football is tough.”

Mhango refused to comment after the game.

Nyondo headed Malawi in front on the 16th minute after a ball was flicked onto his patch in a crowded Ethiopia box when trying to deal with a right flank corner kick which was cut back into the box.

Nyondo added the second on the 69th minute after being put through by Robert Ng’ambi four minutes after Banda had expertly glanced the bar when meeting a left wing cross. Ethiopia substitutes Getaneh Kedebe and Yusuf Saleh scored in either half.
