Speaking in an interview on Thursday, Blantyre Police Station deputy spokesperson Grace Mwale identified the deceased as 41-year-old George Gambalika whose other details are not yet known.

Mwale said Gambalika was driving the minibus which was carrying 21 passengers instead of the recommended 16.

She said: “According to reports, Gambalika was not the minibus’s driver, he just took over from the driver who was serving as conductor at the time of the accident. The deceased failed to negotiate the sharp bend at Chilomoni Police turnoff and the minibus overturned.”

Mwale said the rest of the passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated as out-patients at QECH. n
