If I were

President of the Republic of Malawi, I would take a hard-line on my Cabinet ministers who have not updated their assets with the Office of the Director of Public Officers’ Declarations for flouting the law.

If I were the President, I would realise that this will act as a real test of my pedigree in demonstrating my seriousness on taking a stern action against public officers who failed to comply with the law.

Oh yes, If I were Mr. President, I would appreciate that the public is watching with keen interest to see how I will act on the matter, especially the law  which states that failure to comply to declare assets within the prescribed time attracts a dismissal.

How I wish I were the President that is APM, because I would realise that when Vice-President Saulos Chilima and I led by example by updating our assets, then it is unfortunate that some Cabinet ministers, some of them very senior, have not done so.

Yes Mr. President, I would smell a rat and suspect that these ministers could be hiding something.

I would also realise that if action is not taken on these ministers, then it defeats the whole purpose of having the office which I set up to ensure that there is transparency and accountability by public officers.
