Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has said former Flames assistant coach Gerald Phiri will become its yet-to-be-established academy’s head coach. .
Phiri, whose contract expired last month, was recently not retained in the Flames’ coaching panel by head coach Ronny van Geneugden (RVG) after a fallout.
FAM president Walter Nyamilandu yesterday said Phiri will be reporting to technical development officer Benjamin Kumwenda in the office of the association’s technical director (TD).
“More details will be announced at the launch event, but [as stated earlier], the academies will be run with some financial assistance programme from Fifa.
“The project has been accepted by Fifa and we are receiving technical guidance on its formulation as well as technical support for implementation,” he said.
Efforts to get Phiri’s comment proved futile yesterday, but he recently turned down an offer to return to Azam Tigers.
