Sixteen-year-old Nelson Phiri used home course advantage to emerge winner of the August 2014 National Junior Golf Committee-South Monthly Mug played at Nchalo Sports Club in Chikwawa last Sunday.

Phiri, who shot 46 gross on the front nine and stroked the ball 47 times on the back nine, carded a total of 93 gross beating runner-up 13 year-old Demobrey Chipala by a distant 20 strokes.

Phiri thanked the sponsors Nkhanga Essential Services for sponsoring the junior’s event, saying: “I would like to thank Nkhanga, and also the organisers.”

In the 18 holes category, playing off the ladies tee box, development player (underprivileged) Gift Ngulube, who was runner-up last month at Blantyre Sports Club, shot 113 gross to emerge winner.

He beat runner-up Kelvin Mkumbwa by seven shots. Jerome Sibande also with a gross score of 120 was counted out to third place.

Another development player Samson Ngulube, younger brother to Gift, played his first competition and emerged tops in the nine holes category, having carded a brilliant 63 gross.

He beat last month’s winner, Nchalo-based Patrick Mtileni by 5 strokes while ever-improving Kate Chapola was third-placed with 70 gross.

Darren Kuyeri won the five hole category with 41 strokes while Miguel Araujo was second with 53 gross. Tujaliwe Mkavea came third with 60 strokes.

Six-year-old Carlo Van der Walt got his first gold in the three hole category after beating second-placed Gibrael Lambart and third-placed Tasunje Mkavea. The four-year-old Tasunje was the youngest player of the tournament and is the youngest participant in all tournaments played this year.

National Junior Golf Committee-South chairperson Paul Araujo thanked the sponsors for the good gesture and the parents for accepting to travel with the kids to Nchalo for the tournament.
