Minister of Information and Communication Technology Malison Ndau has said government is considering bringing in more players to reduce challenges mobile network subscribers experience in Malawi.

The minister was responding to Nsanje South West Member of Parliament (MP) Joseph Chidanti Malunga (independent) on why government does not have a policy on mobile connectivity. Ndau said the process is underway and involves facilitating the entry of more mobile players on the market.

“These network problems are all over the country, why can’t we have a policy which will look into all these as a whole unlike having issues being presented in isolation like this” Malaunga said.

In his response, Ndau said: “It is indeed true, mobile operators have their own challenges that is why we are hoping to bring in more players to add on to the three mobile operators we already have in the country.

“This development will also help in creating competition on the market, thereby flushing out these problems.”

Leader of opposition Lazarus Chakwera asked the minister why his area, Lilongwe North West Constituency, is not covered by mobile networks.

Ndau responded: “In fact, we have a meeting today in the afternoon on the same. We hope to rectify some of these problems once and for all.

“You know technology is the way to go and if we want Malawi to be fully connected, enhancing mobile connectivity is the only way this can be achieved and I’m happy to report that we are moving in that direction.” n
