People’s Party (PP) Central Province governor and former MP for Kasungu South East Kizito Mgwembe died yesterday morning in South Africa.

Mgwembe’s death has forced President Joyce Banda to cancel all scheduled trips in the Central Region.

PP publicity secretary Hophmally Makande confirmed the death but said he had no details on funeral arrangements.

Ngwembe was admitted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg since June this year.

“The remains will be airlifted back to Malawi and arrangements will be made once the body is in the country,” said Makande.

Mgwembe, one of PP founding members, was among youthful MCP MPs pushing for leadership change in the former ruling party in 2009.

He served as MP from 2004 to 2009.

  1. He was admitted in June at the Milpark hospital for suffering from what? This is another perfect example of half baked journalism kind of reporting that Malawians have been subjected to for far too long. if he had HIV and you do not want us to know its better just to not report his death at all. He was a public figure and by default the public are entitled to know what killed him. We need to know what killed him so that if there are lessons to be learnt the public should benefit from it.

      1. As far as I am concerned, natural death is only understood when the deceased is over 70 yrs old and was never hospitalised. So for Late Ngwengwe, the natural death hypothesis does not work becoz he was hospitalised for a few months which means he was suffering from something.
