President Joyce Banda has commended the judicial service for safeguarding democracy in Malawi.

The President was speaking at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre on Monday during the swearing-in ceremony of Rezine Robert Mzikamanda as Justice of Appeal in the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal.

The President said the role of the Judiciary in the country cannot be underestimated, describing it as an arm of government that needs to be respected.

Speaking after taking oath, Mzikamanda said he was overwhelmed by his appointment, saying he will perform his duties in a free and fair manner. Prior to his elevation on May 16 2012, Mzikamanda was working as High Court judge since 1997.—Mana
