Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced that fans will pay K500 to watch this year’s Presidential Cup final between Silver Strikers and Mafco from the open stands at Civo Stadium on Sunday.

The development translates to a 150 percent increase from last year’s K200. Football Association of Malawi (FAM) justified the increase, attributing it to the high cost of living. FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said for those who wish to watch the action from the comfort of the VIP enclosure will pay K5 000 while a seat in the Covered Stands will cost K2 000.

Nyirenda also said there will be tight security at the match venue where Youth and Sports Minister Enoch Chihana is expected to be the guest of honour. So, it is either the Bankers or Mafco who will join the pantheon of local greats who have lifted the prestigious cup before. Mighty Wanderers were the first winners in 2009. They also won it again two years later [in 2011].

Civo United won it in 2010 while Big Bullets won it last year. It will be the second time that both Silver and Mafco will be appearing in the finals of the competition. Silver lost to Civo 1-0 in 2010 while Mafco lost to the Nomads by the same margin a year later. The winner will receive a cool K10 million—an all-time record. Moyale’s Gastin Simkonda is the leading scorer with eight goals.
