Presidential women football cup to start at district level

Unlike the previous Presidential National Women Football Championships that started at regional level, this year’s edition will start at district level, National Women Football Committee (NWFC) has announced.

But NWFC chairperson Suzgo Ngwira said on Tuesday that the top eight teams participating in the Arthur Peter Mutharika leagues in the country’s three regions, have been seeded for the regional encounters.

She also said only five most active districts in each region will take part in the K8.7 million cup which starts at the end of this month.

“We have seeded top teams so that inexperienced sides can win something in the event. Apart from qualifying for regional finals, district champions and runners-up will get K35 000 (about $209) and K20 000 (about $200) respectively,” said Ngwira.

The districts that will participate in this year’s edition are Chitipa, Karonga, Mzimba, Mzuzu, Nkhata Bay, Rumphi, Dedza, Lilongwe, Nkhotakota, Ntchisi, Dowa, Blantyre, Balaka, Chikhwawa, Zomba, and Mulanje and Phalombe.
