Project improves revenue collection in LL

Lilongwe City Council (LCC) has applauded Mtendere Organisation for contributing towards transparency and accountability in financial management and expenditure in the city.

The organisation, with financial support from Tilitonse Fund, has been implementing a project in Traditional Authority (T/A) Tsabango in the district to increase citizen participation in operations and administration of revenue collection in market centres under the council’s jurisdiction.

has improved

Speaking at urban executive committee meeting on Friday, LCC city development strategy manager Gift Kasamila said the council has registered a steady improvement in revenue collection since the rollout of the project.

“Our records show that revenue collection has steadily improved in the five market centres of Kaliyeka, Chipasula, Ngwenya, Chilinde and Area 23 where Mtendere Organisation has been implementing its project.

“We commend the organisation for this. However, our fear is on what will happen to other market centres, which were not targeted with the project?” he said.

Mtendere Organisation programme manager Stanley Mantchichi said a study conducted in the five market centres last September established coordination gaps between traders and service providers.

He said the majority of the respondents attributed the challenges to dwindling levels of transparency and accountability in the way district and city councils manage and use financial resources.

“But we also commend the council management for heeding our call to improve its way of doing things. We have seen a lot of improvements in sanitation and hygiene facilities in the targeted markets, which have motivated vendors to pay market fees,” he said n
