Queens captain ruled out of Fast5 tourney

The Malawi Queens will be without their inspirational captain and goal defender (GD) Caroline Mtukule-Ngwira at the Fast5 World Netball Series next month as she is on maternity leave.

Newly-appointed coach Griffin ‘Zagallo’ Saenda and the player herself confirmed the development in separate interviews yesterday.

The Kukoma Diamonds captain is currently the longest-serving and the hub of the Queens.

Said Saenda: “Carol is definitely out considering her situation and being the captain and the most experienced player, we are going to miss her services, but we will identify her right replacement.

“I am not losing sleep over that.”

On her part, Mtukule-Ngwira said: “I cannot make the team under the circumstances I find myself in, but I am sure there are other equally good players that can fill my position.

“Nevertheless, I am looking forward to bouncing back soon.”

Tigresses gangly defender Laureen Ngwira could be an option to fill Mtukule Ngwira’s position owing to her experience and height, but she too has not been active due to her protracted transfer wrangle with Tigresses over her intention to join Alliance Capital.

Mtukule-Ngwira has been a key member for the Queens for almost a decade now.

Meanwhile, Saenda has said she will announce the preliminary squad for the Fast5 Series by next week. n
