RA board chairperson Gomani dies in road accident

Roads Authority (RA) board chairperson Jackson Gomani has died in a car accident.

Gomani met his fate at Nathenje Bridge, Lilongwe, on Monday where the vehicle he was travelling in fell into the river as his driver tried to overtake another car.

Central Region Police public relations officer Nolliettie Chihana confirmed the development in an interview today.

Chihana said the accident occurred around 08am (Monday) as Gomani was travelling from Blantyre to Lilongwe in a Nissan Note registration number NN 615.

She explained: “The driver was trying to overtake another vehicle at Nathenje Bridge, but unfortunately fell into the river.”

Chihana said Gomani died at Nathenje Health Centre after sustaining internal injuries while the driver Charles Malidadi, 37, of Sumani Village in traditional authority (T/A) Nsomba, Blantyre sustained a cut in the head.

“[Gomani’s] body is now at Kamuzu Central Hospital. And the vehicle is extensively damaged,” she narrated.

Meanwhile, police say they are still trying to establish details and identities of the other passenger who was travelling with the deceased.

RA public relations officer Portia Kajanga could not be reached for a comment.

Gomani is the latest senior official to die in a car accident on the M1 Road in a space of two weeks another accident that claimed the life of former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary General Ecklen Kudontoni.

Kudontoni died at Kasese Trading Centre as he drove to Kasungu.

The vehicle he was travelling in swerved off the road and he died instantly, according to the police then.
