Red Lions shift to Mangochi Stadium

Zomba-based Malawi Defence Force (MDF) outfit Red Lions says it will be using Mangochi Stadium as their home ground in the 2018 season.

This follows the prolonged closure of their traditional home Zomba Community Ground which is being upgraded to a fully-fledged stadium.

Mangochi Stadium owners approached Red Lions, offering the soldiers to use the stadium.

Red Lions general secretary Victor Moyo has since written Mangochi Town Council chief executive officer Sellina Chimphamba on the matter.

“In view of this, our club [Red Lions] will be using the ground in question for the 2018 season Super League, cup games and other friendly matches,” reads the letter in part.

Following the agreement, Red Lions will be getting five percent Mangochi Stadium’s gate revenue.

“We would like to get to your attention that we have agreed to your request on condition that you will be contributing five percent of your money [gate revenue] from your share to our team. The said amount will cater for our transport and accommodation during games,” Moyo’s letter reads.

Last season, Red Lions were using Balaka Stadium.

Champions Be Forward Wanderers also use the same venue following the closure of Kamzuu Stadium in Blantyre for renovations.

This season, Nyasa Big Bullets have also expressed interest in using the same stadium.

The club’s chief executive officer Fleetwood Haiya told The Nation that they had earmarked Mulanje Park Stadium and Kalulu Stadium in Nchalo, Chikwawa for their 2018 home matches.

But following the promotion of Nchalo United, who also use Kalulu Stadium, Haiya said they anticipate that the stadium might not be readily available; hence, the decision to explore Mangochi Stadium option.
