Rotary Club International has completed a safe and clean water project worth $466 700 (about K192.3 million) it was implementing in 16 communities in the Central Region.

The project was implemented by Bwaila Rotary Club through Water Missions International with funding from Rotary Club of Edina, Minesota, USA; DDF funds from District 5950; the Wayman Endowment and Rotary Foundation.

Bwaila Rotary Club president Vinay Ganatra said the project will reduce cases of water-borne diseases which were wrecking havoc in the communities.

“There are about 50 000 people who are going to benefit from this project in all the 16 communities which were identified based on a detailed needs assessment that showed serious problems with access to clean water,” said Ganatra.

He said the project was approved by Rotary Foundation in November 2010.

The water facilities were officially commissioned to the communities on Wednesday by the Rotary International Foundation chairperson John Kenny in Lilongwe.

He said water problems are a universal concern and contribute heavily to poor health in most communities where there is no potable water.

He urged the communities to own the facilities and use them to their maximum benefit.
