Yotamu Saka and Margaret Mkwanda basked in Airtel Golf Tournament glory in their respective men’s and ladies’ categories at Country Club Limbe (CCL) in Blantyre on Saturday.

Being the CCL golf captain, Saka led by example by putting home ground advantage to a perfect use as he got a birdie on the 11th hole plus a total of five pars on the way to seal the victory with 41 stableford points; counting out Mokera Malange to the second slot.

The handicap-17 golfer managed to fluff off contention from an exasperating field of 159 golfers.

“The field was quite intimidating and it was not easy to beat over 150 golfers. However, as captain of the CCL ship, I had to rise to the occasion and prove to everybody that success is possible as long as you are confident and determined. It feels great to win such a major tournament,” Saka said.

As for Mkwanda, she blanked her first two holes but she quickly pulled her socks up to gorge on four pars as she collected 17 points on the front nine and 24 on the back to reach the desired total of 41points, three ahead of runner-up Margaret Mukwenha and four in front of third-placed Carol Mbalanje-Banda.

Don Whayo emerged as champion in the seniors section with 37 points. He was also among the five two-club winners alongside Adam Sailesi, Chris Mzokomera, Breggar Kaingwe and Gift Landisi.

Airtel Malawi managing director Charles Kamoto, who was accompanied by the mobile network providers’ board chairperson Alex Chitsime, said they were excited with the overwhelming support their brand generates.n
