Salimu Chazama to fight Kayuni at Sand Festival

Following the exit of Wilson ‘Hardhitter’ Masamba from the ‘Judgement Day’ rematch against Osgood ‘The Punisher’ Kayuni at Sand Music Festival in Salima on October 29, another Malawi Defence Force (MDF) boxer Salimu Chazama has been slotted in.

Chazama will now take on Kayuni in an eight-round light-welterweight non-title bout at Sunbird Livingstonia, the boxers’ promoters, Mulanje Last Boxing Promotion (MLBP) and sponsors of the bout Chombe Foods Limited have confirmed.

Buoyed by his second-round technical knockout (TKO) victory over Tanzanian Mwinyi Muzengera two weeks ago, Chazama, whose record stands at 22 wins (17 TKOs) and four losses, said he has planned to beat Kayuni on TKO as well.

“This will act as my revenge against Kayuni. I lost to him by a single point in December last year due to biased judges. This time around, I will not give judges a chance to spoil my day as I intend to beat Kayuni by TKO,” Chazama said.

But Kayuni, who boasts 25 wins, six losses and two draws, believes Chazama’s sentiments are mere rhetoric.

“The problem with Chazama is that he talks too much. Let him talk that nonsense after our bout on October 29,” said Kayuni, adding MDF has already released him for the imminent match.

MLBP director Mike Chitenje said they opted for Chazama as Masamba’s replacement after noting his recent outstanding exploits while Chombe Foods Limited’s general manager Gresham Thomas said they believe the Sand Music Festival has the potential to take local boxing to greater heights.

Musician-cum-parliamentarian Lucius Banda’s Impakt Events Management is organising the festival, which will run from October 28 to 30. n
