Sangie comes of age

She came onto the music scene and captured the hearts of many with her voice and thoughtful messages about love and women empowerment.

But after three years of releasing singles, the reggae and dancehall musician, Sangie, real name Angel Mbekeani, has come of age and has cut a 10-track album titled Painless.

Sangie said in an interview that over the years she has learnt a lot and even though she finished recording the album last year, she was waiting for the right time to release it.

Sangie: The music industry is not the easiest one

Said Sangie: “It has been three years of learning. It has been a rollercoaster. The music industry is not the easiest one, but I have grown. I am now wiser and ready to take my music to the next level.”

The artist said the album, which features artists such as Lulu, is basically about love.

“I am talking about love and women. It is all about women who have been in painful relationships, but by the end of the day they are still here, still surviving,” she said.

“It takes a lot of strength and courage for women to endure all the heartbreak and pain in relationships, but still be able to make it in life and carry on with a smile on their faces.”

Sangie, who is now synonymous with women empowerment in her lyrics, said she plans to have a national tour after the launch of the album on June 30 at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.

Other artists who will perform at the launch are Patience Namadingo, Lulu and Zathu Band.

“The response we are getting is overwhelming. Tickets are already selling and we are hopeful to have a successful launch,” she said.

Some of the songs in the album include Mkazi wa Ngwiro which features poet Robert Chiwamba and Pepa which features Lulu.

Sangie is one of the few sucesssful female secular artists in Malawi and is famed for writing motivational and mature lyrics.

Some of her hits such as Ndangozizidwa attacks property grabbing while I do it for love, is a song about an enduring love that women have. n
