Director for NMA Chifundo Maganga confirmed the development, saying the want to use the fame and acclaim of the South African Choreographer to expose the awards and Malawian music by picking someone who is relevant in the show business.

“We wanted someone who is not only known in Africa but the world over so that he can help our artists to set their eyes for a bigger stage too in their work,” he said.

A section of homophobic Malawians have not taken the news well, criticising the choice of Somizi who is a known and self-confessed gay, but Maganga says there is no point in judging a person based on his sexuality.
