The Youth Against Aids Organisation (Yagao) has said there is need to sensitise sex workers to the need to protect themselves and their partners through proper use of condoms.

Yagao president Frank Chimbalanga said this in Mangochi on Friday when closing a three-day training for sex workers drawn from traditional authorities Mponda and Nankumba in Mangochi.

“You must say no to sex without a condom to prevent transmission of the virus that causes Aids,” said Chimbalanga.

He said Yagao wants to see the sex workers economically empowered to become independent.

Mangochi district Aids coordinator Ernest Kadzokoya, who was the guest of honour, encouraged the sex workers to go for voluntary testing and counselling (VCT) and not wait until they become sick.

“You should as much as possible start taking the life-prolonging drugs [anti-retroviral drugs] once you have been found with the virus that causes Aids,” Kadzokoya advised.

Established in 2002, Yagao offers HTC services, behaviour change, vocational skills, computer training, recreation and resource centre,
