Ship cruise to Likoma postponed

The ship cruise from Monkey Bay to Likoma which was scheduled for Mother’s Day holiday has been postponed until the festive month of December.

Spokesperson for the event organisers, Patrick Chikoti, said the cruise has been called off because the MV Chilembwe will be under maintenance by the set date.

He said: “Malawi Shipping Company advised that MV Chilembwe will not be ready by the set date. They have, however, assured us that by mid-November it will be available.”

The ship is expected to depart Monkey Bay Port in Mangochi on December 23 at 7am. It will have a stopover in Salima at 9am and arrive at Likoma Island the same day at 5pm.

On December 24, there will be an excursion to House of Chambo in Mozambique which promises to be a great get away from the city’s hustle and bustle for both local and international tourists.

On December 25, organisers expect to have a one-day trip to Chizumulu where there will be traditional dances and music performances.

The event comes as a replacement of Likoma Festival which will not take place this year.

Last year, a ship cruise on the MV Ilala was part of the Likoma Festival.  n
