Southern Region Football League at standstill

The mourning period of president Bingu wa Mutharika has put to a standstill the promotion and relegation race for the Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League (SRFL).

The second-tier Premier Division was supposed to have been concluded by now, but it was put on hold following Mutharika’s death a fortnight ago.

SRFL chairperson Trouble Kalua on Thursday said the revised fixtures for the resumption of the Premier and Division One leagues would be known after Mutharika’s burial on April 23 2012.

“We are at a standstill due to the mourning period. We hope that after burial, we may release the fixtures on the weekend of April 28-29; otherwise, our plan was to take advantage of the Easter holidays and play more games,” said Kalua.

The Premier League promotion race to the Super League is between new leaders Bvumbwe Research, who top the 18-member log table on 70 points from 31 games, and second-placed Nchalo United on 69 points.

Rock United anchor the table on 16 points and look destined for demotion. Currently, Zomba Air Wing lead Division One on 55 points from 22 games and might earn promotion to the Premier Division.

There are 17 teams in Division One whose worst performers are Andiamo Bullets on 14 points from 17 games.
