Spellings competition on the cards—Unique Marketing

A spelling contest, aimed at increasing English proficiency among primary and secondary school pupils starts on January 22, organisers have said.

A marketing agency, Unique Marketing, in collaboration with the South West Education Division (SWED), brings the contest for public and private schools in the division.

Lewis Mbaula, projects director at the firm, said English is an important subject on the Malawi school curricular.

“Unfortunately, students have problems in spoken and written English. The spelling competition will help the students read a lot, which in turn will develop their English skills,” said Mbaula.

The winning schools will get trophies, while winning pupils in the secondary school category will cart home K100 000 ($600), while K50 000 ($300) awaits the primary school winners.

Other prizes include books and certificates of achievement.

According to Mbaula, each school will nominate four pupils—two boys and two girls—through entry forms that schools in the division will receive.
