Stand up in Lilongwe
Stand-up comedy has gone mainstream in Malawi in the last few years.
Malawians are naturally gregarious people, so the elevation of comedians to their rightful place, in social gatherings, was just a matter of time.
To reinforce this stand, some Lilongwe based stand up comedians have organised a comedy night event, marking the beginning of monthly comedy events in the capital.
Dubbed the biggest comedy show ever, the first event will be held at the Champions Bar this Friday where Maclean Mbepula, Dee Satha, Taliban, Simpo, Bamusi, Ngunga, Kalibolonje, Thokozire, Juliet Saidi and a surprise guest makes up the line-up.
“It’s the launch of what will be a monthly series, every last Friday of the month will be comedy night. We have various artists performing including myself, Maclean Mbepula, Ngunga and Kalibolonje, just to mention a few. Some artists perform in English, others in Chichewa and others in both languages,” said Satha in an interview.
She said the move has been necessitated by the ever growing support for comedy which is a manifestation of the appreciation of standup comedy in Malawi.
“Comedy is slowly becoming the good habit everyone wants to have so we felt, why not showcase some of the local comics in town? That way, we as comedians, get more exposure and maybe, people will appreciate and accept comedy as art.
“People should expect lots of laughter. It’s going to be big, that’s why I’ve dubbed it as ‘the biggest comedy show ever’. You don’t wanna miss it. We encourage Malawians and expatriates alike to come and support local talent,” she explained.
