Standard Bank has said, generally, it is happy with how the just-ended knockout competition was run, saying it attracted a lot of excitement.

Summing up the tournament that was again won by Mighty Wanderers, Standard Bank marketing manager Chimwemwe Matonga said: “The tournament went on well. There was no controversy and violence. Overall, it has been a successful tournament.

“However, there is always room for improvement and there are lessons that can be derived just like any other competition.”

A local football commentator Kim Kamau also described the tournament as unique and one that brought new things.

“We saw our own legends Jack Chamangwana and Ernest Mtawali being involved in the actual draw. The presentation of the trophy was in itself also unique in that it was done right on the pitch as it is done in Europe,” said Kamau.

The Nomads beat Silver 1-0 in the final match at Civo Stadium on Saturday. It was a repeat of last year’s final when the Nomads beat Silver 2-0.

Wanderers have won the cup a record three times, having first won it during its inception in 2005 when it was called the FAM Cup. They beat Admarc Tigers [now Azam Tigers] in post-match penalties .

In 2006, the competition was not held and Standard Bank took over sponsorship in 2007 when it was called Standard Bank/FAM Cup. Silver Strikers won it after beating Escom United 1-0.

Just like Wanderers, Silver and Moyale have reached the finals three times each and Moyale have won it twice while the Bankers, Blue Eagles and Azam Tigers have won it once each.
