Communities in Lusangazi area in Mzuzu are living in fear after a resident spotted a buffalo wandering in a nearby bush last week.

Malawi News Agency (Mana) has established that the animal was first spotted last Thursday by a villager, Chaipa Nkhata, who was herding cattle in the bush.

In an interview with Mana, Nkhata confirmed the development, saying he was surprised to see the animal.

“It was on Thursday last week at around 11am. I saw the buffalo coming towards me, but I quickly went to the ground. It then passed without harming me,” he said.

Commenting on the issue, group village head Kamangadazi said he alerted officials from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) who quickly deployed game rangers in the area.

“Luckily enough, after surveying the area, the rangers confirmed its presence and assured us that they would work tirelessly to get hold of the animal before it caused harm,” he said.

DNPW division manager for the North George Nxumayo has since advised communities in Lusangazi not to panic, saying the game rangers are working tirelessly to ensure that the buffalo is captured.
