Street rat strikes gold

Listen to this article

Celebrated music producer and jazz artist Erick Paliani holds the view that the knowledge of jazz music gives an edge for a musician to stand out in any genre.

One man stands to prove the theory true—David Luhanga alias Street Rat is that man.

The musical journey of the artist, however, is not new in the music scene as the artist has been one of the pioneering members and leader of bands such as Souls of the Ghetto and Body Mind & Soul and has gone solo under the moniker Street Rat.

Street Rat has switched from voodoo jazz to rock solid reggae in his third effort titled Born in the Ghetto, which he plans to take international.

This will be the Street Rat’s third record released, and the first major international launch.

Earlier albums have mostly delivered a more funky traditional style, a kind of Malawian Afro-Jazz, but this time he is bringing up-beat energetic reggae.

The album revolves much around Rastafarianism and injustices that a Rasta has to deal with and on the other hand it talks about how the Rastafarianism movement is a source of strength.

Spare Dog was launched in 2014 and has an in-house studio called Moto Wambili Studios based in Nkhata Bay.
