Superwoman fest a success—Cream
In a post-mortem, Cream chairperson Zilanie Nyundo said the training, exhibitions, concerts and community outreach went according to plan as the festival returned for the second year running last weekend.
Apart from the closing concert, 26 members of Musicians Association of Malawi (MAM) women’s desk and girls from Area 23 learned performance techniques, drumming and flute in a two-day workshop organised by Marlene Chakwera and German’s Les Souers duo. The training ended with a free community show attended by about 200 people at the Music Crossroads premises in Area 23 on Saturday.
“During the performances, the community appreciated the skill of Mlodza Stars and the Model Choir. Martha Mituka, Les Soueurs and the participants all had time to perform before the unceasing rain stopped the good times,” said Nyundo.
The rains reportedly started when Theatre for a Change were about to do their act.
Nonetheless, she said an exhibition, dubbed “Kwathu is Where the Art Is, was a resounding success at La Galleria. Notable patrons included American Ambassador Jeanine Jackson, European Union Head of Delegation Alexander Baum, Ambassador Peter Woeste and director of culture Elizabeth Gomani-Chindebvu.
The Sisters with Voices concert at Crossroads Hotel was opened by girls of the Mlodza Stars’ choir music and traditional dance performance. Other performers included gospel revelation Martha Mituka and Helen Daka Maulidi, Poet Maclean Mbepula, Yuki Asano, and Fortress, consisting of Thembi and Tamanda Kamangwala.
At the show, Thembi Thadzi, Women of Distinction Awards young woman leader, gave an inspirational speech for the youth.
